Recommended Dietary Changes to Prevent Gout Flares
- Weight loss in patients with overweight or obesity
- Limit high purine foods such as:
- red meat
- organ meats
- shellfish
- beer/alcohol
- sardines, anchovies
- Limit sugar sweetened foods/drinks, e.g. soft drinks
- Consider vitamin C supplement (no more than 500mg daily) only if your diet has insufficient vitamin C
- Have a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, low fat dairy, whole grains
Medications that can cause gout flares:
- certain medications used to treat blood pressure (e.g. hydrochlorothiazide)
- aspirin
- niacin (vit B3)
- cyclosporine
- levodopa
**Do NOT stop any prescribed medications before speaking with your physician. Have a discussion about whether alternatives exist.
