Recommended Dietary Changes to Prevent Gout Flares

  1. Weight loss in patients with overweight or obesity
  2. Limit high purine foods such as:
    • red meat
    • organ meats
    • shellfish
    • beer/alcohol
    • sardines, anchovies
  3. Limit sugar sweetened foods/drinks, e.g. soft drinks
  4. Consider vitamin C supplement (no more than 500mg daily) only if your diet has insufficient vitamin C
  5. Have a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, low fat dairy, whole grains

Medications that can cause gout flares:

    1. certain medications used to treat blood pressure (e.g. hydrochlorothiazide)
    2. aspirin
    3. niacin (vit B3)
    4. cyclosporine
    5. levodopa

**Do NOT stop any prescribed medications before speaking with your physician. Have a discussion about whether alternatives exist.
